LED TV’s are the latest in cutting edge technology to hit the television market, providing a real step-up in the evolution of televisions and a fantastic range of features that will really strike a chord with consumers.
LED screens now feature in a wide range of displays – from billboards to portable devices and tv’s to industrial equipment, the screens are providing significant benefits. Their low power consumption and thin design are particularly suited to battery powered devices, allowing much more usage time with one charge.
The main difference between an LCD and LED display is the way the screen is lit. An LCD TV screen uses cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFL’s) for its light source and an LED TV uses LED’s, or light emitting diodes, which tend to be more power efficient and extremely effective at delivering sharp, crisp images.
But just because they’re more power efficient doesn’t mean they’re dull – quite the opposite. LED displays tend to be brighter and many come equipped with non-reflective screens, meaning they’re better suited in brightly lit rooms that are subject to direct sunlight.
LED’s have many advantages over other types on the market, the most apparent of which is their size. LED’s are among the thinnest displays ever made, and significantly lighter, making them easier to mount and more attractive on walls as they don’t protrude so far into the room.
The thinness of LED displays is due to the way that the bulbs are placed around the tv. The bulbs can be placed behind the tv (called backlit displays) or around the edge of the tv (called edge-lit displays). Edge-lit displays tend to be thinner and because they have fewer LED’s, less expensive. However, backlit displays are more capable at showing deep blacks as they use a technique called ‘local dimming’; where LED’s are switched off in dark areas, preventing unwanted light filtering through the panel.
LED’s also tend to have a better range of colors as they use red, green and blue lights to produce more realistic color combinations and greater colour depth, as well as a better contrast ratio.
Light emitting diodes are also very robust, and have been quoted as lasting over 50,000 hours without any degradation in quality – that’s 5 years of constant tv watching! The screens themselves are also better for the environment as they don’t contain mercury and are easier to recycle than their LCD counterparts.
The one area that LED panels do suffer in is the viewing area, with many losing colour and black levels at extreme viewing angles beyond 30 degrees. However, this is an issue being looked into by the manufacturers and some early solutions are in-plane switching panels, so keep an eye out for those.
Naturally all these advantages aren’t free and LED televisions tend to be more expensive than others. But with all these great features, their lower power consumption and smaller physical size, it’s no wonder that the future of tv’s looks to be LED. Prices can only go down, so get yourself to a retailer and give them a look.
