One thing that has been ever growing in popularity in the last hundred years or so in our society is the moving picture, or movie. Ever since scientists figured out how to manipulate still photos to give us the impression that there was motion, we have loved watching stories played out before us. From the old silent movies of yesteryear, to the blockbusters today, we love our movies.
Despite the huge difference and leaps in technology over the years, the basic stories of our favorite movies have remained the same. They contain the same basic elements that have made up stories told for hundreds of thousands of years, whenever people gathered together. Even in modern blockbusters, the same elements tend to appear again and gain.
The primary element, of course, is the main character. The flawed hero. He or she usually starts out, just like us, with a normal life, and normal problems and concerns. Then they are literally forced onto the path of the hero’s journey. This journey is present in the vast majority of movies from all time. The main character must go on some sort of quest, be in a real, physical quest, or perhaps an emotional or spiritual one.
Another element is that the hero must build a team along his or her quest. Few movies have a hero overcoming obstacles on his own. While there are notable exceptions, most movies feature a hero developing a team of like minded people dedicated to pursuing a worthy cause. What kind of worthy cause? A common enemy.
The villain, or the antagonist can vary from story to story. Oftentimes, the villain is a representation of the common fears of the day, like nuclear destruction in the fifties, or the fear of climate change. The main character must use all his skills and courage to defeat this common enemy.
Whether you are watching an old movie, or the newest blockbuster, it helps to realize that movies were designed to entertain, and to give the viewers a better handle on their own problems. With more and more movies being made each year, they can only get better and better as humans find common ways to solve our common problems.
