My friends dragged me shopping the other day. We went to this electronic shop, and were just kind of browsing around. I didn’t expect to buy anything, just a way to kill a Saturday afternoon when you don’t have anything to do. My friend might have mentioned that he was shopping for a vacuum cleaner or something. But when I saw what they had in stock, I was amazed.

They had these portable DVD players that you could take anywhere. I had always thought you needed to plug your DVD player into your TV at home or something. But not these amazing little pieces of advanced technology. They weren’t very big, kind of the same size as those electronic dictionaries you see foreign exchange students carrying around with them all the time. Naturally, this included the screen also. You really didn’t need to plug it into anything else. I almost bought it on the spot, but then realized you’d have to find an outlet to plug it in to.

But that thought was killed instantly as the helpful sales clerk explained to me that they ran from batteries. Some of these have batteries that run for up to six hours. My mind was racing with the possibilities. I could go to McDonalds, buy a hamburger, and watch the latest episodes of Lost. Absolutely and purely fantastic. Hold on a second. Wouldn’t the sound from my DVD player bother all the people who were around me and trying to study or something?

That’s when I was in for another shock. Most of these DVD players come equipped with little headphone jacks, so when you listen, you can listen in total privacy. Nobody around you would feel bothered. It was the perfect solution. And no matter what the sound was in your environment, your headphones would block them out, enhancing your DVD watching experience. Just as I was dreaming of my future, I thought of another problem. I could never afford one of these marvels. Surely they just cost several hundred, or even a thousand dollars.

This is where I was delivered the most startling revelation I have ever heard. They were just barely over a hundred dollars, and some were even less than that! I could probably borrow that much from my friends if I needed to. But of course, in these modern times, most stores accept major credit cards. So I bought my own portable DVD player, and I have been happy ever since.
