Sometimes a sequel is made soon after the first movie has been released, to capitalize on the success of the first movie. To release it while it is still fresh in people’s minds. Even make the first movie and set it up so people are expecting a sequel. Other times, the first movie stands on it’s own, and several years pass before a sequel is made. Sometimes the sequel is so good that it can stand on it’s own, and you need not know anything about the first movie to thoroughly enjoy the second. “The Road Warrior,” starring Mel Gibson, is such a movie.
The movie of course commences where the preceding one, “Mad Max,” left off. We have our central character out unaccompanied on the wastelands fending for himself in a world with no law and where only the strongest carry on. Of course, there is the temporary account of what got him to this location, how the world ended up to where it is. But one of the impressive things about this movie is that is adequate. You don’t need to know anything about the previous story to enjoy this tale.
After a temporary scuffle with a group of bandits on the highway, we find Max spending most of his time in exploration for provisions, and gasoline, or petrol. Then he comes across something bizarre out in the wasteland. He finds a metropolis, of sorts, in the middle of nowhere. They are strappingly fortified, with a massive wall surrounding their city, and innumerable creative forms of defense. For they have something very costly to guard. They have a considerable tanker of energy.
Of course, it doesn’t take long for the loose gang of bandits to envelop the city, and need the petrol. They tell them that if they hand over the goods, then their city won’t be destroyed. The population of this city seem to be between a rock and tricky place. They have a plan to take their petroleum, and get away to an area that is secure, and free from bandits and outlaws. A position where they can start new, and build a new association. The difficulty is, they don’t have a way to transport the tanker of gas. Max, a just admitted to their city, has a way out.
Only a few days ago, Max has seen a fitting means of transportation to tow their tanker to the promised land. The only difficulty is how to get to the truck, bring it back to the fortified city, and get the tanker of gas out of there without getting killed by the bandits. Auspiciously, Max has a plan. Mutually with his new friend who happens to have an ultra light jet, they will creep out of the city, bring the vehicle back, and haul the tanker to safety.
And this is the core of the movie. The fight between the inhabitants who only want a protected life, free from fear of bandits, and the bandits themselves, who want to get what doesn’t belong to them, and destroy whoever stands in their way. Fortunately, the city people have a plan that even Max doesn’t know about. And this will make all the difference. This picture was so well-liked that it caused many to go out and see the previous that they otherwise didn’t know about. It is a must see if you haven’t seen it, and is crammed with outstanding scenes and quotes, so you may consider it as an addendum to your video library.
