Since the Dharma Initiative were first introduced early on in the TV series LOST we have slowly found out where they originated from and what sort of experiments they were doing.
Through them we have some history of the strange island our characters find themselves on. But what were the Dharma Initiative really doing there? They claimed that they trying to save the human race, but is that really what they were doing there?
When John Locke discovered, then opened the hidden hatch early on in LOST, he inadvertently opened Pandora’s box.
What they were actually researching is revealed little by little through out the course of the show. Ever since Locke first opened the hatch back in season 2, we have seen a number of orientation videos explaining different facets of themselves, particularly in each differing hatch.
In the ‘Swan’ they were studying electromagnetism, in other stations, such as the ‘Hydra’ they were researching animals, in particular sharks and polar bears. The ‘Staff’ was used for the research in medicine, while at the ‘Orchid’ they were busy manipulating time and space.
All this was put into question however, when Locke discovered ‘The Pearl’, which appeared to be a station built for the sole purpose of observing all the other stations. This was shown to be a lie when it was discovered that all the notes that observers were writing down were simply being dumped in the open.
The Dharma Initiative were supposedly trying to create a perfect utopian society. But for whose benefit? Many people were brought to the island over a long period of time, such as builders and cleaners, along with teachers and engineers, in which to work in the many research stations.
Some of them were teachers or engineers and posted to any one of the many stations scattered around the island. There were key members of the Dharma Initiative who will have known the full story behind this secret society.
The Initiative were eventually corrupted by the power that the island hid from the outside world. Together with their conflict with the islands original inhabitants let to their downfall, as they were eventually wiped out in a purge.
We did learn a great deal more about the Dharma Initiative in the last season of LOST, but whether the last season will answer and more questions about them we will soon find out. Will we ever discover exactly what they were doing on this lost island?
‘Lost‘ ended the fifth season by introducing Jacob, teasing the real war for the island, and providing shocking twists.
