Hard drives are an essential component to a computer. It’s where all the data is stored and compiled. The operating system is stored on the hard drive, and usually a computer cannot run properly without an operating system to give it commands and instructions. The program files are stored on the hard drive, as well as personal files.
It’s very sensitive though. Inside the hard drive is a constantly spinning disc and if this is dropped or damaged in some way it can be irreversible. If something that’s magnetic is put on it all the data can be erased.
Storage runs anywhere from a few hundred gbs, or gigabytes, to a thousand or more, a thousand being called a terrabyte. Depending on the user space needed will vary. For personal use one might only need a few hundred gb’s, and for work one may need more than that.
Internal hard drives are stored inside the computer and mainly used as the main drive for the computer to run on. External drives are stand alone and can be easily hooked up to an existing computer by USB and used for extra storage or for backup.
Hard drives do have a life, and after some years will grow old and die. Though some may last for many years, some may only last a year or more, depending on the brand and the workload of the drive. They do need to be replaced after some time though, so be sure to have two places to back up your data in case of failure.
Hard drives commonly need cleaning up for maintenance too. Sometimes old and erased files can stay stuck in the system and a defragmentation is needed. This is easily done from the computer, though it takes a long time. It will help the drive to stay clean.
A drive can also be reformatted which means it is wiped of all data and can be started anew. This erases all previous data, however, and anything else that is stored on it. Be sure to back up first before doing this.
