As far as Childrens DVDs go, this is a great childrens movie where 19 year old Alice goes back into the wonderland after persuading herself that her initial visit at the age of six, was merely a dream. There have been mixed opinions on this film, some say it is awful and nothing like the first (bear in mind it wasn’t intended to be) and many say it’s a brilliant addition to the much loved Lewis Carroll books.

We believe this motion picture is a good blend of the two popular publications, “Alice in Wonderland” and “Alice through the Looking Glass”. We did enjoy a lot of the film, although for adults, it might be a little bit of a let-down in comparison to the original books. That being said, as far as Childrens DVDs go, Alice in Wonderland 2010 is obviously one to check out and we consider it to be one of the best Tim Burton films ever made.

However; this motion picture is a lot darker than others that you may have seen – such as the Disney version. It’s not really a great film for younger children. A few of the fight scenes are possibly not ideal for everyone – however the PG certificate indicates this.

Children older than seven or 8 should have no difficulties viewing this motion picture with their mothers and fathers though. It’s not frightening – it’s just a little on the dark side. Mr Johnny Depp is brilliant in this role and we have to admit, we did think (on first impressions) he would be playing the same character as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory but in fact he plays a much more complete character who at times is incredibly humorous. As grown ups, we did have a good laugh aloud more than once during the motion picture which can be unusual for Childrens DVDs these days.

Mia Wasikowska, who plays Alice, is a brilliant young actress and plays the role really well. Helena Bonham Carter is cast as the nasty Queen of Hearts from the original Alice in Wonderland story. However, we felt her performance was more akin to Queenie from Blackadder. For those of you who are unfamiliar with this character, you may find the tone of her voice and actions a little annoying but for us it was very entertaining – although to tell the truth, a complete rip-off.

The CGI figures are amazing, especially the Cheshire Cat (Stephen Fry) and Absalom (Alan Rickman). But, with regards to splendor, the landscape in which Alice spends lots of her time, isn’t as good as, say, from the Walt Disney motion picture. The Jabberwocky is a fantastic evil dragon-like monster who finally shows up at the conclusion of the movie and in terms of computer effects, it’s good – not brilliant.

We felt much of the tension and story was greatly akin to a Harry Potter motion picture as opposed to the traditional tale of Alice in Wonderland the Walt Disney edition. Nevertheless, like the majority of things, Childrens DVDs are transforming so we predicted a change from the original, much loved, Alice in Wonderland Disney motion picture.

Overall, we’d recommend this for children older than about 7 and we would recommend the PG certificate is abided by. It is a terrific film but if you’ve seen the original Walt Disney motion picture, or read the Lewis Carroll publications, then do not get those hopes up! Childrens DVDs are changing therefore we feel that this is an excellent expression of what children expect from a film right now.
